AGA Responsible Gaming Week

This week is the American Gaming Association Responsible Gaming Week. It runs from August 1st thru 5th. Responsible Gaming Education Week (RGEW) was created by the AGA in 1998 to increase awareness of problem gambling among gaming industry employees and customers and to promote responsible gaming nationwide.

The AGA and the entire gaming industry realize that education is essential to promoting responsible play and increasing awareness of gambling disorders, and RGEW provides gaming companies with an opportunity to expand on work they do every day educating employees and patrons about the issue.

In preparation for RGEW the AGA and the  (NCRG), released new responsible gaming videos. The video by the NCRG, “What is a Gambling Disorder?” , “explains in simple language the science that informs our understanding of gambling disorders.” The AGA’s video, “What Are the Odds?”, is meant to “illustrate the house advantage inherent in all casino games and demonstrates how America’s favorite game – the slot machine works.

I support this initiative. My app is indicative of my commitment to this endeavor.  The best practices are the preventive ones. Who better to provide this information than the companies and the employees that work in gaming.  They know the warning signs that lead to the onset of problem gambling.   Keep it fun!

Pennsylvania Gaming Expansion could lift off at Philadelphia International Airport

When you arrive in Las Vegas, you know as soon as you depart the plane that you are in a gaming town. The sounds of the slot machines greet you through out McCarron International Airport. That same sound could vibrate in Philadelphia International Airport within the next 18 months.

If a gaming expansion bill in Pennsylvania includes slots in airports, this would generate a pipeline of revenue for the state. It would consist of jobs and gambling revenue. It would require oversight by the PGCB.No one under 21 would be allowed to play. The rules involving any jackpot that exceed $1200 would be applicable.

Philadelphia International Airport

The logistics that make this a winning proposition are the amount of daily flights to and from Philly.
Ironically, that number is approximately 1200. Philadelphia is also the 20th busiest airport in the nation and serve more than 30.4 million people a year. The airport is within an hour drive time of the brick and mortar facilities. A boost for the City and the Commonwealth.

Gambling Tips 101 - An Insider View

Every summer when I am invited to a barbeque or cookout, the conversation will always come up.
Someone will ask how is business? My response is always "good". Then someone else will ask
"What do you do?" Once I tell them  I work for a casino, there is a smile and then a revelation.
The range goes from I love your place to I have never been there. The commonality between each is they want to know how they can win. I feel like a stock broker being ask for a tip on the next move from Wall Street. I want to be invited back next summer.

My Top Three

Tip One - Learn the game. Before you invest your money, read a brochure or google the rules of the game. Some of the rules variate from casino to casino. Odds are still against you but you'll understand what you are doing.

Tip Two - Find a strategy. Every game has a plan. You should have one. The percentages favor the house regardless. A great motivational speaker said failing to plan is planning to fail. Some moves are smart. Most moves are lucky. Many are dumb!

Don't be DUMB!

Tip Three - Be responsible. This tip throws the crowd every time. It stunned you as you read it. The
dictionary definition of responsible is having an obligation to do something, or having control over or care for someone, as part of one's job or role. My job is to see that there is responsible gaming. This means not letting someone play if they are impaired. It also includes restricting play once a designated set of continuous hours has passed. So use this tip and keep the game fun. I would elaborate and share more. But I am headed to another cookout.
 What more can I ?

Have a great Labor Day Weekend!

Gaming Mid Year Review 2015

In case you missed it, we have hit the halfway point of 2015. If you are into gaming entertainment, this has been 6 months of speculation throughout the industry.
Here are the highlights of 2015 with my bold predictions of what happens by the end of the year.

Casinos proposed in North Jersey with tax revenue going to Atlantic City. Prediction -No.
Governor Christie supports it. New Jersey has a 30% approval rate of him. They will reject
his initiative.
Atlantic City has the Pier and Revel reopening.  Prediction - The Pier reopens while Revel
does not. Bart Blatstein's track record in Philly shows he can develop a project and make it
appealing. Nothing definitive for Revel until 2016.

Pennsylvania gets online gaming this year. Prediction - No! The interest is there but the difference on the tax rate will morass the process. The budget for fiscal year 2015-16 will take center stage with taxation and educational expenses. Gaming will take a backseat.

California and New York will have online Poker. Prediction - No! Not enough support to sustain traction. They will revisit the issue in 2016 to beat a proposed federal ban.

Sports Betting will be approved outside of Nevada. Prediction - Yes. This is the year of acquising to popular opinion. A landmark Supreme Court ruling regarding marriage. The legalization of marijuana use for recreational and medicinal purposes is a further example of giving in to public demand and making a profit. Can you spell prohibition? Sports Betting is something that is accepted by the public and some of the professional sports leagues. Fantasy Sports wagering is just the precursor to allowing gambling on a live event. Once approved in New Jersey, Pennsylvania will lobby for it as well.

Share a comment if you choose. Have a wonderful Fourth of July!

Online Gaming News from Pennsylvania

The Online Gaming talks are continuing in Pennsylvania with both sides presenting bills and testimony before the PA Gaming Oversight Committee in Harrisburg. The bills before the committee
include one by the Chairman Rep  John Payne with Bill 649, and Rep Tina Davis with HB 920.
There is another bill that is Poker only. The two that are mentioned have the best chance of moving forward with bi partisan support.
The opponents of any online gaming legislation are lead by Sands Bethlehem Casino and Vice President of Government Relations, Andy Abboud, stated the position that online gaming would not protect underage children from gaming. He also cited that gaming online would not support the brick and mortar operations. Mr. Abboud was questioned by Rep Davis about mobile apps that are currently used by Sands in Nevada and how that differentiate from what would be considered in Pennsylvania. There was no definitive answer given. She also ask Mr. Abboud about a fine Sands received in Las Vegas for a substantial amount of money. Mr. Abboud was not able to recall the fine and averted the question.

The proponents of the online gaming legislation included Caesars Vice President Michael D. Cohen and Penn Gaming Vice President of I Gaming Chris Sheffield. Cohen cited the success of Caesars Interactive in Nevada and New Jersey while Chris spoke of the integrity and safety nets of the international online gaming community. Sheffield also highlighted the employment opportunities online gaming would add to the state. Cohen and Sheffield jointly agree that the perspective of their testimony would transmit to a proposed online gaming environment in Pennsylvania.

Entertainment at its best

The technical side of the process was provided by GLI Vice President of Government Relations, Kevin Mullaly and GeoComply Operations Manager Lindsay Slader. Each gave either a demonstration or explanation of how technology works in other jurisdictions with gaming online. The consensus was that this is something that can be done and regulated with the controls that the Commonwealth would feel are appropriate.

My take is that all businesses that are successful must have an online presence. If it is minimize, then the amount of revenue is dramatically reduced. If I have a competitor in a neighboring state that can provide a service that I can't, I am at a competitive disadvantage. Will that disadvantage be limited to geographic boundaries?  No! If I want to play in New Jersey, I can still drive there. So if the promotions of playing online entice me to do so, I would play less in my home state. If the same promotion was available where I live, I would play there. Note the staggering decline in gaming revenue in Atlantic City was parallel to the increase of money spent wagering in Pennsylvania once tables and slots were approved. There was a direct correlation.

If this online gaming initiative continues thru May and gains traction in the PA State Senate, things could get very interesting. Stay Tuned!

Online Gaming News from Pennsylvania

On Wednesday, the 1st of a series of meetings took place about the merits and concerns of online gaming in Pennsylvania. It was held at Harrah's Philadelphia by the Pennsylvania Gaming Oversight Committee. This committee is chaired by state Rep. John Payne, R-106, of Hershey. HB 649 was introduced in February by the state rep. It would empower the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board to explore online gambling options and to create regulations for any games it approves.

Jan Jones and Ron Baumann testifying before Gaming Committee

The hearing was provided with testimony from Jan Jones Blackhurst, executive vice president of Caesars Entertainment Group. Blackhurst told the committee members that online gambling is already prevalent in Pennsylvania and the rest of the country, even though it isn’t legal. Blackhurst stated,“Today’s reality is that Internet gambling is taking place in all 50 states, almost all of it illegally. It’s an environment that’s ripe for fraud and criminal activity and it provides no tax revenue. However, the online gambling experience in the states where it is legal, has been successful from a regulatory perspective. Minors can't gamble, the vulnerable are protected and consumer protections against fraud are in place." Ron Baumann, general manager of Harrah's Philadelphia ,also testified about the allowing Pennsylvania Casinos to increase agility and speed to market. Bauman also express interest in gaming tax credits that would be used as capital investment incentives. This is consistent with West Virginia and New Jersey.

The I Gaming views of Blackhurst and Baumann were shared on part of the regulatory framework and strong consumer protections to:

  • Prevent minors from playing, with robust age and ID checks
  • Ensure players within borders with strong geo-location technology
  • Tools to deal with problem gambling

In accordance with the report from Econsult for the Pennsylvania Budget and Finance Committee, the annual ongoing potential revenue would mean tax collections of approximately  $43 million applying a 14% tax. The industry is in support of a tax rate of 12%. I Gaming would take off quicker with the industry proposed rate. More promotions related to sign ups would increase the number of people that want to play. This would make Pennsylvania a more appealing place to play than Delaware or New Jersey. There are several additional meetings scheduled for April that will continue the conversation about I Gaming ,fantasy sports betting and gaming on mobile device.

Online Gaming and Tropicana Atlantic City: Q&A with Luisa Woods - Executive Director of Internet Marketing

I was able to meet with Luisa Woods, the director of online and internet marketing with Tropicana Casino in Atlantic City.  Luisa is primarily responsible for overseeing the entire online remote gaming. She provides strategy, planning and budget guidance. Luisa also mentors her team across various online marketing disciplines dedicated to acquisition and retention of digitally-connected customers.
Luisa was part of the Mobile and Tablet Summit in Atlantic City and participated in a panel at the G2E 2014.

Luisa  made time for a series of questions about the 1st year of online gaming in New Jersey. These 8 made the final cut.

1). What are the positives about the 1st year of online gaming in New Jersey?

New Jersey has historically been a pioneer in the gaming industry. The state looked to maintain its leadership position by taking a step forward into i-gaming. The NJDGE had an enormous challenge to bootstrap a new industry vertical in a very short period of time, with a series of constraints that have not existed previously in other markets. The fact that we have demonstrated that a region can successfully operate online gaming within its physical borders is a big success.

An additional positive outcome is the growing evidence we’ve built to demonstrate that online gaming is not leading to cannibalization. This is most evident in the poker vertical, since online is a relatively larger piece of the market. In the aggregate, revenue from poker has grown with the launch of online poker. For example, monthly poker rake in Atlantic City for October of 2013 was about $2.9M versus about $4.3 million in October of 2014.

Another success we are seeing is the creation of both jobs and expertise in the i-gaming industry in the state. When other markets are ready to launch, they will be able to look to New Jersey for best practices in successfully implementing regionalized regulated gaming.

2). What were the challenges during the 1st year and where is the industry now in relation to those concerns?
The biggest challenges the industry faced in our first year dealt with ensuring that only eligible patrons were permitted access to the system. Eligible patrons are individuals over 21, physically located in New Jersey, who are not on any restricted gaming lists and who are who they represent themselves to be. There have definitely been challenges with executing against all of these requirements that have slowed the rate of adoption and industry growth, and of course we err on the side of caution. It is critical that no one gains access to the system who should not be permitted to do so. But the industry as a whole continues to innovate and push forward. Our geolocation solutions are improving all the time, as well as our expertise in assisting patrons who do encounter problems to navigate third party systems to be able to successfully play.

3). Tropicana has shown consistent growth with the online numbers. What do you attribute that to?
Our growth should really be attributed to a lot of hard work by many talented people. It’s been a combination of effort and focus on the customer. Gamesys, our technology partner, have been a huge part of that success. Their product delivers what our patrons want.  In addition, the land-based marketing team here at Tropicana has worked side by side with the i-gaming team to offer a seamless customer experience. And that results from a leadership team that has always supported the vision of i-gaming as an extension of our commitment to deliver more to our patrons.

4). Do you see Poker, Slots or Casino games as the cornerstone of the online market?
Poker needs liquidity to be successful, which makes it challenging in a market with limited population. But ultimately, customers have their preferences. I don't see any one area dominating the others. We as operators respond to the demand of our patrons. We bring them familiar games that they know from the property while introducing new games and experiences like our popular Community Jackpot feature that can be triggered by any spin on any game.  It pays out a jackpot to the person who won it, and a shared jackpot to all of the other patrons who have played for real money in the previous hour. We believe that market leadership comes from giving our customers what they want.
5) How did the Mobile and Tablet Summit heighten the awareness about online gaming?
Every time professionals in the industry come together, they not only share knowledge, but bring attention to the industry. The fact that people like you attend, and share what you see and hear is a huge boost for us. The many facets of expertise, including legal, government, banking, security, marketing and software, all impact each other. We need to maintain an ongoing dialogue. This conference brought positive attention to our industry and is a win for the participants.

6). Has online gaming grown your customer base?
The 1st year of i-Gaming has definitely brought incremental growth for Tropicana Atlantic City. Of course, the majority of our revenues come from our land based resort. But many patrons who are choosing to play online are not existing TropAdvantage members, so they’re completely new patrons to us. That number is holding steady at around 60% of our online patrons. Of the remaining patrons in our system, about half are active players at the property, and the other half have not been to the property within the last year. These are people who are returning to the brand.

7). What mobile device (if any) is the preferred medium of your clientele?
Without giving away any proprietary details, I can tell you that we’re seeing trends very similar to what is happening in the marketplace as a whole. More and more of our patrons are adopting mobile, both as a way to join our online casino, and a way to play. We do see a higher level of play on Apple devices over Android, which I would attribute to the fact that Apple has permitted us to put our app in their online store.

8). I am a customer that only plays in your brick and mortar casino property. I love to come down to dine at Cuba Libre twice a month. How would you convince me to play online?
First of all, we would take the opportunity of your visit to make you aware of our online product. When you come to the property, you would see signage everywhere. If you’re staying with us, it is even on the room key when you check in. Next, we focus on trying to create synergies between online and offline play. We leverage the resources of the property as rewards that patrons can earn or win. And to top it off, you'll earn TropAdvantage tier points that benefit you when you visit the property.
I'm convinced!
I want to thank Luisa for her time. She showed her excitement with her answers and stated she is extremely happy to be working for Tropicana. She cited the leadership of Tony Rodio and the power of Tropicana's brand as components for success.

SugarHouse Casino Poker Room: Countdown at the River

SugarHouse Casino is expanding into the world of Poker. As you read this, the management team of Rush Street Gaming is working toward the opening of the 1st Poker Room in Philadelphia.
Rosemarie Cook: VP of Casino Operations

SugarHouse’s casino and poker team is led by Rosemarie Cook. Mrs. Cook holds the title of Vice President of Casino Operations. She has recruited some of the strongest poker managers in this region. This team includes Raye Ramsey; Director of Poker Operations. Raye is assisted by three  managers, Magdalena Gonzalez, John Qualtieri and Norman Remilev.

 John, Raye and Magdalena

I was granted an all access interview to each member of the aforementioned group as they work feverously to bring poker to the 5thlargest city in the country. Here are some of their responses.
What are the main responsibilities of your position at SugarHouse?
Raye - "I work closely with VP of Casino Operations to implement and oversee overall strategies for customer service, comping, games layout and mix, revenue growth, and expense management in order to maximize profitability. I am also responsible for the overall integrity of daily operations. I make sure that we model regulatory, departmental and company policies and procedures."
Please tell everyone your background in the poker industry?
Raye - "I worked on cruise ships as a dealer, opened the 1st poker room in Florida and was in Borgata's Poker Room for 10 years."
What type of limits can the players expect?
Raye - "Our limits will be dictated by the players. We plan to open with 10/20 and 20/40 Limit Holdem. We will also offer 2/4/6 and 4/8/12 Limit Holdem games."
How experience is your staff?
Raye - "All of the supervisors and above have 10 years of experience or more. We have 50 experienced dealers from various poker rooms in the region."
Speaking of the managers. Is there a game (other than No Limit) you would love to see here?
Magdalena - "Pot Limit Omaha is really popular because it will bring in action between limit and no limit."
John - "I agree. Pot Limit Omaha will be a change of pace for Holdem players."
Norman - "I 'll go with 7 card stud. I am old school. LOL!"
The opening is just moments away and the employees are excited. As time goes on, how you'll keep them motivated?
John - "The management team will focus on being a positive influence and will lead by example. We will provide rewards and recognition as a tool to motivate."
Norman - This is not my 1st opening. I plan to get to know all the employees on a first name basis. I will give them intermediate goals and lead by example. If I groom them for success, I will prepare them to one day do my job."
Compare the Poker play in a resort such as Atlantic City to an urban market like Philly.
John - "The biggest difference will be the times in which the volume of players change due to the majority of the local workforce schedule."
Magdalena - The difference is we are in a city that has more nightlife and cultural events. Many people enjoy poker and will be out and about. This will bring us many new players."
I was told that one of the shift managers has a unique connection to this property. Take this opportunity to share it with the readers.
Norman - "That would be me. I grew up right around the corner from here. My father worked here when it was the refinery for 36 years and I worked here for 3 while I was in high school and college. So I am happy that SugarHouse is back. Although it's back as a casino, this is great for the community and the city."
The vivid concept of the Poker Room came from Rose. What was your vision as you prepare to open the 1st poker room in Philadelphia?
SugarHouse Casino Poker Logo

Rose - "When I thought about a poker room for Philly, I wanted a clean, comfortable place with a vibrant feel to it. We want the room to have the conveniences of our main casino floor. This will be a fun, safe and community place to gather where people can play with their friends.
Tell me one of the nuisances of the room?
Rose - "The room has an exciting ambience to it. We call it our introductory Poker Room. It gives us a chance to introduce poker prior to our expansion."
Describe the room to the prospective players?
Rose -  We have state of the art tables with each seat having it's own charging station. We will have in seat service for dining. Our players can text or call for a seat. SugarHouse Guests can utilize www.bravopokerlive.com. The users of this app will be receiving the added benefit of text message updates regarding the status of players' reservations. During opening, we'll have gift bags for the first players that fill our seats.
Have a seat.

What will Poker bring to SugarHouse?
Rose - "On a Saturday night, 5 guys in a car are looking for something to do. One of them is a poker player. They'll come to us. We'll have an additional amenity. Something new to offer our players as we move toward expansion. Woo Hoo!"

Online Gaming and Poker

New York has expressed interest in the online gaming market. Poker is gaining support from legislators and casino lobbyists. This is not surprising. The state of New York sees the opportunity to capitalize on a growing appetite for gaming.

Poker is an established community where skill out weighs luck. Unlike slots or other casino games, Poker players can largely determine their fate. The game is socially acceptable with conservatives and is extremely popular.

If  New York is successful, poker could be part of the online landscape by 2015-16. This would allow
more quantified data of how things are working in the states that current offer an online experience.
New Jersey,Nevada and Delaware are the three states where you can game online. When you factor states like California and Pennsylvania into the mix of possible online gaming jurisdictions, instant
liquidity is obtain. The compact agreement between Delaware and Nevada could be modeled and include other interested parties. This would be no different than playing a national lottery game like Mega Millions where wagers are taken all over. You can play Mega Millions in 44 states plus the District of Columbia and the U. S. Virgin Islands. The odds of winning are just more favorable.

The online experience is the future of gaming. Poker is just the easy lift to get things started. When gaming first expanded into Pennsylvania, the intention was to only allow slot play. Delaware and West Virginia  did the same thing. When West Virginia offered table games, Delaware and Pennsylvania followed suit. Once Poker is introduced, the landscape will open up to other casino offerings.
A winning hand!

Online Gaming and Sports Betting: Imagine That!

Just two more weeks to wait until a ruling out of New Jersey is rendered about Sports betting. If successful, the racetracks and casinos could be looking a jumpstart for the winter business. If Delaware is any indication, the public will gravitate to betting on sports in droves.

Delaware can only offer parlays on the NFL and has crowds every Sunday. Parlay cards have a high edge with one loss eliminating you. New Jersey wants to offer straight bets that are more appealing and easier to hit. They would require that you could bet on just one game. House advantage is about 4.5%. House advantage on a three team parlay in Delaware is 6.25%. Delaware also pays for 1 and not to 1,so your payout is diminished.
Imagine how this would enhance your gaming experience in New Jersey. On your commute home, you could stop at a racetrack or casino in the Garden State and bet on your favorite team. When I have a bet on a game, I have a vested interest and a reason to watch. So the choice between Scandal and Thursday Night Football is a no brainer.
Olivia Pope is now seen on Demand

Imagine if you could bet from your mobile device similar to Las Vegas and throughout Nevada. This brings the sports book right to you. You could get the line and act on it within seconds. When I bet in Nevada, I can enjoy doing something else at the same time. My dinner or show reservations are met and I can periodically check my phone for updates.

Imagine if you lived in Europe or the United Kingdom. You would not have to fantasize about sport betting because it's legal and already being done. They advertise on all mediums and are widely known. It hasn't change the integrity that is associated with the games wagered on and millions of dollars are bet everyday. Many of the same operators that are doing business there have set up franchises here. Some of the prominent operators are Paddy Power, Ladbrokes, GTECH ,Amaya and
William Hill.

They think it's time. Don't you?

Casino Marketing: Is your social media strategy working?

The new rules of advertising and promotions dictates that casinos make social media a part of their marketing plans. In acquiring your new customer, don't be afraid to try new ways to reach out.

Let look at Twitter. This is my favorite vehicle to reach people. I start my day by acknowledging my
followers. My next step is to surf the trending topics from the cities that I have a constituency in. I want to know what is relevant and why. Then I can give a intelligent statement that can be no more than 140 characters. Not Easy! But without providing content, I'll lose followers. I won't gain any additional ones either. This is a brief overview of what works for me.

Firms who fail to keep pace with shifts in consumer habits, tastes and spending as well as advances in technology run the very real risk of putting themselves at a serious disadvantage in the market place.
Now does your strategy do this? Are you concentrating solely on your latest promotions? Are
you aware of what your current customer wants? Are you a trending topic? If  your answers
to my questions were no, yes, no and no, then you are missing out. My casino experiences taught me that the leader sets the trend.

Facebook, LinkedIn, Blogger, Instagram, You Tube and Twitter, have unique nuisances that make them work.  I am currently involve with each of them and enjoying success. Most of your new customers are using 1 or more of the above.

How relevant is your strategy?  Follow me for more insight and apply what works for you.

Philly Casino is raising the ante

It's a rare occurrence to talk about a local casino actually expanding and not about ones facing closure. SugarHouse Casino recently broke ground on a $164M expansion plan that includes a poker room with approximately 24 tables, an attached seven-story parking garage and more non-gaming related amenities.

SugarHouse is planning for new restaurant spaces and a ballroom/event space that overlooks the Delaware River. Public riverfront trail access will be expanded by 250 feet.
SugarHouse is preparing for the opening of the poker room with a training class that consist of dealers and employees from security, food and beverage and player services. They are currently learning Texas Hold' Em and Omaha.

I was able to speak with several members of the class about what the experience of embarking on a new career. Here are some of their responses.

What is the most challenging aspect of learning a new game?

Anna Chen - "My biggest challenge right now is reading the hands. Telling the difference. between a high or low."

Gilberto Mercado - "I am working hard trying to get the mechanics down from the dealer's perspective. I enjoy poker so my transition to the gaming side is enjoyable to me."

Unique Wilson - "I am the only left handed person in the class. I 'm doing things in reverse and retaining information differently."

Tell me some of the things that make a good poker dealer?

Emmitt Whitefield - "Two things that make a good poker dealer are knowledge of the rules and calling a good game. I want to make my poker players have a memorable experience on my game."

Unique Wilson -  We're in the hospitality and entertainment business so being personal and engaging is important. I love guest interaction and I'm looking forward to displaying that."

What made you want to be part of this class?

Anna - "I wanted to acquire a skill that would lead to a better job. I have been part of the SugarHouse Family for 3 years and looking forward to meeting different people everyday."

Who in the class has been with the company the longest?

Unique and Emmitt have been with SugarHouse since day one! SugarHouse just celebrated it's 4 year anniversary.

What is your ultimate goal once you complete this class?

Unique -  "I dream big. One day, I want to  deal in the WSOP tournament."

All of the members of the class are looking forward to the expansion and the growth opportunities that SugarHouse will offer. I want to thank each of the participants from the class that consented to answer my questions. I also want to acknowledge the instructors of the class, Magdalena Gonzalez and Raye Ramsey.
